File Sharing Across Network: Setup Guide for Home and Office 2026

Setting up file sharing across a network lets every computer in your home or office access shared files without copying them to each machine. Here's how to set it up correctly on Windows and Mac, and how to troubleshoot common issues.

Windows Network File Sharing Setup

The foundation of Windows network file sharing is SMB (Server Message Block). To share a folder: right-click it → Properties → Sharing tab → Share button. Add the users who should have access and set their permission level (Read or Read/Write). Click Share to confirm.

For the shared folder to be accessible from other computers, Network Discovery must be enabled. Go to Control Panel → Network and Sharing Center → Change advanced sharing settings → turn on Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing for your Private network profile.

Other Windows computers on the same network can access the share by typing \\computer-name\folder-name in File Explorer, or by browsing to the computer under Network in the left panel.

Mac Network File Sharing Setup

On Mac: System Settings → General → Sharing → File Sharing → enable it. Add folders to share by clicking the + button under Shared Folders. Add users under Users and set their permissions.

Mac uses SMB by default, so Windows computers can connect to Mac shares. In File Explorer on Windows, type \\mac-ip-address and enter the Mac username and password when prompted.

Mixed Windows and Mac Networks

SMB is the common protocol that both Windows and Mac understand. Mac can connect to Windows shares and Windows can connect to Mac shares, both using SMB. The key is making sure SMB sharing is enabled on Mac (it's in the File Sharing options) and that you're using the correct IP address or computer name.

Network File Sharing Performance

Transfer speeds depend on your network infrastructure. Gigabit ethernet (1000 Mbps) achieves 80-100 MB/s real-world speeds. WiFi 5 (802.11ac) achieves 30-100 MB/s depending on signal strength and interference. WiFi 6 (802.11ax) achieves 50-200 MB/s. For large file transfers between computers in the same location, ethernet is significantly more reliable than WiFi.

Sharing Files Across Networks (Different Locations)

Local network file sharing only works when computers are on the same network. For sharing files with people at different locations, you need either a VPN (to extend your local network over the internet) or a cloud-based solution. Files-share.com is the simplest option for one-time transfers — upload from one location, share a 6-digit code, download at the other location. For ongoing access, a cloud storage service like Google Drive or OneDrive is more practical.
